The historical path of kudus and the house


Kudus was closely related to historical Islamic movement in Java about the Walisongo history Jakfar Shodiq was known as Sunan Kudus, one of the walisongo member that had become penghulu in Demak, and ordered by the sultanate of Demak to spread out the Islamic religion in Kudus (Salam, 1977). Then the region grows became the center or Islamic activities. The glory had srink  after the leader of spirituality sunan Kudus passed away in 1550 M.and ended after new authority the Mataram Islam kingdom conquered almost all regions over central java and East Java. Since 18th century kudus was among of Dutch colony in East Indies as regency.

In 19th century kudus develop forward through it’s economical and social field, due to of the agriculture production raise in significant way. The west Kudus grows as the sheltered for the wealthies agriculture’s merchants. This development sharply occurred when the cigarret industries grows. The development declined when the situation of political and economical unstabled in early 20th century until 1970s. When the situation turned to be more condusive the development goes to the southern and eastern parts of the region.
by the sociological area, Kudus devide became two parts, eastern Kudus and western Kudus that devide by a Gelis river, Eastern Kudus was old city that conotized to the ancients, closed and introvert but also obedience and wealth. Meanwhile at eastern Kudus known as growing area that more modern and heterogenic, more opening for secularism
People of western Kudus knownas religious society, the religious ritual dominated their daily life. At the other side also mentioned as good merchants and skillfull. Among them, there was idiom Jigang mean ngaji (read holy Quran) and trading (as merchant). Ngaji is religious activity that reflected the obedience of muslim in practicing the religion rules.and dagang or trading is the economic activity that conduct to fulfill the earn of living in the real life. Activities for living and after life must be conduct equally to reach the real happiness for today and tomorrow life.

Kudus people perhaps is among of cultural sanctuary society that still influenced by their tradisional habbit, as a religious merchant in their daily life. Trading and entrepreneurship are their ways for earning money, but they still sourround by religious atmosphere. The specialties of the cultural tradision can be found on their vernacular home which is called as Joglo Pencu.  Now adays only few ofpencu house remained. Some of its were sold and particularly were vanished by damaged or remodeled for new looks.
